Calculate children’s doses with these formulas.
Young’s Rule is calculated using age. Add 12 to the child’s age. Divide the child’s age by this total.
Example: dosage for a 4 year old : 4 divided by 16 (4+12) = .25, or 1/4 of the adult dosage
Clark’s Rule is calculated using pounds (lb), NOT kilograms.
Divide the child’s weight (in pounds) by 150, then give the child that fraction of the adult dose as the appropriate child’s dose.
Example: for a 50-pound child give 50/150 (or 1/3) of the adult dose.
